18 Month Old Jenny

Jenny is doing great! She is so communicative. She seems like she can say pretty much whatever she wants. She's also really good at just using a few words and then adding some signs or pointing or pulling your hand in a specific direction to communicate her wants. She's also growing really well. She's still about in the 80th percentile for height and 50th percentile for weight.

One funny thing is how much she likes babies. She loves babies. If we ever see a baby or anyone even under the age of six really she'll call out baby. She loves carrying baby dolls around too. Usually she just carries one but sometimes two or three. One day she really wanted to climb onto the couch on her own and she was holding three babies. She wouldn't set them down and was so upset when she couldn't climb up on the couch. She'll often communicate through her baby dolls too. If we walk outside on a cold day, instead of saying that she is cold, she will tell us her baby is cold. Or on one occasion she fell and the thing she was most upset about was that the baby she had been holding had fallen during the fall. She calls herself baby too. If you try to tell her she's a kid or try to tell her her name is Jenny she will get very adamant that she is "baby". This was particularly true over Christmas when we went to Washington and she was surrounded by 3 younger cousins.

For her 18-month photoshoot, she would not put down her doll as much as I coaxed. Or sit on her own for that matter. So these were the pictures we got. Oh well, you win some you lose some.

We were at least able to get a few good family shots and sibling shots.

A few random things about Jenny at 18 months. If you ask Jenny what her favorite color is she'll say red though she doesn't really know the which colors are which and calls almost every color red. Her favorite movie is "Stickman". And she calls animals by the sound they make so a dog is a "woof woof" and a horse is a "neigh". She absolutely adores dogs. If we ever see a dog at a park, she gets so excited and we have to pet it. She is also a total early bird. No matter what time I put her to bed the night before weather it be 7:30pm or 10pm, she is awake at 6:30am the next day. Another random thing - she has developed a fear of birds. Over our road trip to the Grand Canyon we encountered quite a few very large and scary looking crows. On one occasion, when Jenny was holding a half eaten sandwich and David and I were distracted putting Tessa into a back carrier, one crow got close to Jenny and she was really frightened. I frankly don't blame her. Since coming back from the trip, she'll see even just pictures of totally harmless birds in books and point them out saying "bird" in a scared voice. (For instance, in this Curious George book there is this totally innocuous little bird you see flitting around in the illustrations that has nothing to do with the story line and Jenny will point it out almost like she is afraid of the bird for George.) (Update: we've worked with her and at 19 months she thankfully no longer has a fear of birds).

Jenny is such a sweet little girl. She can totally keep up now with the "big kids" now. She loves to run and chase with Tessa. She loves playing games like hide and go seek, tickle monster, and freeze tag. She totally understands the rules of how these games work too and she picks up the rules really fast too (usually a minute or less). She seems so smart. Sometimes with her intelligence, communication skills and higher than average height I forget she is only a year and a half. When she has a melt down or gets fussy and just wants be held 24/7, I have to remind myself she is still just one and a half. Still a baby in lots of ways. But that is a good thing too. I love her cuddles and I love the occasions that she still wants to be rocked before bed. We're lucky to have our baby girl.
